M. K. Ahmed founded M.K. Ahmed & Sons in 1927, a provisions store in the central market area of Bengaluru, Karnataka. The customer centric service of the small provision store got fame and attracted customers from various parts of Bengaluru. Understanding the difficulty of our loyal customers, M.K Ahmed & Sons branched out to prime residential areas and towns within the city. The new stores were operated and managed by the sons of M.K Ahmed.
The explosion in consumer products in the Eighties increased the choice to the customer, and the tastes of the consumer underwent substantial change with expectations of modern conveniences; the market was ripe for a Supermarket format, especially in the up-market suburbs. Drawing on this rich heritage and experience in the family retail convenience store business, Mr. Abdul Rahman, the last son of M.K Ahmed wanted to change the retailing experience.
In April 1981, Mr. Rahman formed M K Ahmed Trading Company in Indiranagar, which was a developing town at that time. He introduced the modern shopping experience of self service concept, combined with the traditional ambience of personalized attention in the suburb. This led to enormous success, and today M K Ahmed Trading Company was rechristened to M K Retail Company, which is one of the most successful and reputed supermarkets in Bengaluru and Indiranagar, a ‘A class' lifestyle society and town.
Presently, M K Retail Company is a family managed business, and has re designed and improvised the self service concept and the supermarket several times. Despite the emergence of many competing supermarkets, the business has grown exponentially.
